Volunteers Info

Center For Wooden Boatsolunteers of Schooner Lavengro are a vital part of its success. From swinging a paint brush, polishing the brass, to crewing the boat, we depend on your help make it all work. The opportunity to learn to sail, read maps, and caring for the vessel is there for the taking.

The simple act of choosing to volunteer make all these possibilities available for you to experience. So if you feel the calling give us a call at 206-255-9747 or you can , and we will get in touch with you. We have an active sailing schedule that provides for a continuous opportunity to help, with many weekends being the time for boat maintenence and getting to know your fellow volunteers.

Volunteer Job Needs and Opportunities

Shipwright, Carpentry, and General Maintenence Skills

Although the Lavengro is in great condition these skills are always necessary to have available when the need comes up. There is always painting, varnishing, and polishing needed on the boat. Because the boat attends many “Tall Ships” and other public events each summer, it needs to put its best face forward.

Volunteer Coordinator

This position is not as complicated as it might seem. You would work with the Ship's Captain to assist in coordinating volunteers with the work parties or in times of special needs when emergencies arise.

Ships Engine Knowledge and Maintenence

The Lavengro has a diesel engine that could always use someone who would like to help with the responsibility of its care and well being.

Photography

The Schooner Lavengro, and Zodiac for that matter, seriously Center For Wooden Boats need an archive of images that can be used in a variety of ways. These images can be either in a digital and/or film system. However, if a digital camera is used they need to be saved in a manner that retains the full image data, such as the “Tiff or RAW” file format.

That way when an image is used for print media, such as a brochure, a letterhead and business cards, as well as the web, the resolution will result in excellent imagery.

You can help us create this much needed resource of images. So, if you have a camera, a good eye, and want some experience and credit for your work to be known, give us a call at 206-255-9747 or and we will get in touch with you.

So Come and Join Us...!

As we have previously stated , the Lavengro is a living history of our maritime past. By volunteering you can learn how we are connected to the great wind ships and sailors of yesteryear. You will learn how to 'man' the helm and be called to 'watches' by the ship's bell. Learn your sailing station and raise the sails on the only working and classic gaff-rigged Biloxi Schooner on the West Coast. Also, by using charts you will learn to identify aids and hazards to navigation. Plot the schooner's course as Captain Vancouver did in these waters two hundred years ago.
